Editor's Note: The HODINKEE 10th Anniversary Weekend, or H10 as we're calling it here at HQ, starts today! We thought it would be fun leading up to the big weekend to ask our editors and writers to each pick one of their favorite stories from the first decade of HODINKEE
falske ure to share again with you all. It could be a story with personal significance, a story that changed their relationship to watches, or just one that they really want everyone to check out again. Enjoy.I'm talking about the Prospex Save The Ocean (STO) series. First introduced in 2018, this line of special edition watches is updated annually with a new take on an older Seiko design, highlighting a variety of marine animals that one might encounter on an exotic dive trip. We've had Seiko Turtles with dials inspired by humpback whales, Seiko Monsters with dials that riff on penguin tracks, and even Seiko Samurais that reflect Manta Rays onto their dial surface. In the 1970s, the 222 was the third of three integrated-bracelet sport watches from the so-called Holy Trinity of fine watchmakers – and here it was, making a triumphant return after 38 years on the sidelines. Sure, we've long had the Overseas (and we love you, Overseas!), but there's something about Jörg Hysek's original 222 design from 1977 that feels so retro and right. In 1996, Asian retailer The Hour Glass purchased a majority stake in Gérald Genta, before it was acquired by Bulgari in 2000. If you've been paying attention, no doubt this story sounds more or less the same as that of Daniel Roth, which was also recently revived and announced its first Tourbillon Sousc
ription under the aegis ofYou're probably familiar with Genta since his designs have become more ubiquitous than an Ed Sheeran single in the past few years. His first big break came with the Universal Geneve Polerouter. I've always loved the Polerouter Date for its trapezoidal date window, just a subtle geometric wink toward the shapes and designs that would come to define his career. Next came the Omega Constellation collection, launched in 1959.
They had shown great entrepreneurial skill, and turned an idea born out of tragedy into one of the hippest names in Mayfair. Every month, the capital’s upper crust would flock to the flagship boutique to brush shoulders with the likes of Orlando Bloom, Ewan McGregor, and other celebrity clients. British watchmaking was cool again. That slight inconvenience is more than made up for by the generally greater resistance of annual calendars to damage, and their greater ease of goedkope omega horloge use (to say nothing of, in general, their lower price). While there are still some diehard traditionalists who think of the annual calendar as nothing more than a dumbed-down perpetual that no self-respecting haute horlogerie maker should have anything to do with, they're steadily becoming more popular (though they're still relatively uncommon). From the top (and at the end), the guys also chat about new overlanding platforms (Jeep vs. Land Rover, of course), Jason's recent road trip, new watches, hard-fought legal battles, and a whole lot more. Whether you want to live in your car or simply want to relax by watching someone else living in theirs, this episode will have you covered. Just press play and a huge thank you to G-Shock for sponsoring this episode of the show and for helping to make The Grey NATO possible.I wouldn't exactly say cooler heads have prevailed since then – a conflagration that is still smoldering to the tune of 500+ comments is no more likely to go out overnight than the Centralia coal fire – but there has been enough water under the bridge for the notion that there might be a more considered perspective to seem slightly more plausible than it might have seemed two years ago.
I asked Jack and Danny to plug in their mics and help halpa bell ross kellot me talk over this novel need for more and more hours. And from early 8-day Cartiers to Hublots that boast 50 days of power reserve (and require a drill to wind), we dig into the need for a longer power reserve, some of the bigger PRs in watchmaking history, and some of our favorite power-reserve indications. Thanks so much for listening, if you have a need for more and more power.I started the hunt with a 38mm Omega Speedmaster but the oval-shaped subdials didn't sit right with me. On to the Tudor Black Bay 36 which I just wanted to be a Rolex, plus the Arabic numerals were missing and this was something I decided was integral to the tool genre. I thought about looking into an IWC Pilot's Watch in 36mm but I needed to start with a brand I was familiar with to slowly ease into the game.
