I remember when this piece was first shown, I wasn't really sure about my feelings towards it. The ornate engraving on the case and dial are certainly not to my own taste, but that doesn't mean they're not to others'. You may remember the brand from the recent collaboration with H. Moser. The two figures behind the design are unchanged from that piece: The Armoury cofounder, a passionate watch collector and an early advocate of Naoya Hida & Co., Mark Cho, and his design partner, Elliot Hammer.But as a fashion guy – before launching Blamo, he worked at menswear shop The Armoury – Kirkland knows his stuff. Since buying a digital Casio, he's gone through many of the phases that might sound familiar to other enthusiasts: Casio, Seiko (lots of Seiko), falling in and out of love with Rolex, but mostly, just buying stuff that makes him happy.Somewhere along the way, history got muddled, and now Genta often gets the credit. Even I parrotted it a few days ago on social media, so a huge thanks to Jeff Stein (more than a Heuer guy!) for alerting me to the error of my ways.
The scene in London was no boring affair with queues (I know my local jargon) roughly 2,000 strong. Duck Kim was the lucky first in line and first to buy, having camped out overnight beginning at 4:30pm yesterday. Asked why he did it, Kim said "I have the other 11," which makes a certain kind of completist sense. Still, he goedkope tag heuer horloge said, "I was expecting a moonshine bracelet." So were we, Duck, so were we.You can see in other photos further below, but the 3 o'clock subdial is actually a 60-minute and 12-hour counter, with the orange 60-minute hand covering up an off-white 12-hour hand when the chronograph is set to zero. The orange marks around that counter also serve as a burn rate indicator for pilots who need to do quick math on the fly. The lugs on the case are straight, a callback to an earlier era (and one Omega seems to be more and more happy to come back to, which I find quite cool).
The exhibition is in line with Vacheron's ambitions for its new home on East 57th Street – the new boutique is a spacious, airy space which the company will use for both watch experiences and retail, and for art exhibits, as well. Along with Richards's photographs, several of Vacheron's own watches with a connection to adventure and exploration are also there, including several Overseas models (and the Overseas' predecessor, the 222), and pocket watches.Because of the time of the watch's production, its luminous markers are tritium, not Luminova, which lends the neo-vintage design an added layer of interest for enthusiasts. It feels more authentically vintage with its patination-prone lume then a similar model made today might. Likewise, the use of fake bell ross watch a great manually wound chronograph caliber with roots in the original era makes this special Carrera all the more appealing. For under $5,000, it feels like a bargain.Regardless of the word – I recently used "conventional" to describe the Tudor Ranger – On wrist, the Atlas is far from fancy but it feels great. And with the bracelet, represents an entire consideration of the field watch in that the simplicity of the formula is bolstered by its completeness and the design feels cohesive if a bit bland. Or maybe "safe" is a better way of thinking about it.And for those who can't travel to Zell am See (although I must say, it's entirely worth the trip), there will be ice-racing pop-ups around the globe in the coming years, if all goes according to plan. The team already successfully staged a small restaurant-bar pop-up just prior to Christmas in Munich.
