Of the handful of these watches which I've come across in the past, all have been fitted with white dials, making this piece a rarity within a rarity, so to speak. For comparable money to a Memovox or more desirable variants of Vulcain’s Cricket, this is in my opinion a far more compelling watch.Ticking at 3 Hz and offering a power reserve of 100 hours, the 1154 is an automatic movement that is essentially the no-date version of the 1151. It's the same movement used in another rather handsome Fifty Fathoms LE.The story of the St. Moritz starts in 1980; it was then announced at basel in 1982 and hit stores late in 1983, and was sold in three colorways: stainless steel, two-tone (steel and yellow gold), and solid yellow gold. Later, it became a canvas for a few interesting gem-set and skeletonized examples.
This is my favorite of the bunch. The Tonneau shape always feels very aligned with Bulova and other early 20th century American watchmakers to me, and this execution is very Repliky Richard Mille rm 47 nice. You've got those chunky lume-filled numerals surrounding an elegant railroad track for the minutes, and the date is integrated in an unobtrusive way too. When I get to the Bulova booth at baselworld, the silver-dialed Tonneau will be the first thing I ask to try on.What makes this particular example special is its condition. At any given time, there are tons of Speedmasters for sale, just like sports Oysters, but not all are created equal. The same goes for how examples have been preserved, with some having taken better care of their timepieces than others. This example has likely spent the bulk of its life to date unworn, which on one hand is a shame, but also something to be celebrated given the opportunity it now affords.
