Last year's polarizing Rolex release was the two-tone Explorer. This year it's the Air-King. Around tradeshow season, collectors always bellyache about the brand's conservatism and beg to see something different – something they haven't seen before, something unexpected. But in its own way, this new Air-King is every bit as startling.The New York sale will take place after the thematic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 50th Anniversary sale and the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XV, which are both scheduled to take place in the Swiss cultural capital from May 6-8, 2022.Similar in many ways to the 2023 edition, above, this is the 2022 Ice Racing edition of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1. Given that it launched on the 50th anniversary of the original Chronograph 1, this special edition for the event follows closely in the footsteps of the original model but also came with an extra long white velcro strap so you can wear it over the sleeve of a winter jacket while skiing behind a car on a frozen race track. As one does.
The vintage theme continues to the writing on the dial and its chapter fausses Richard Mille rm 011 ring, which are rendered in gilt print. The lume has been applied nicely and heavily by hand to the hour markers and to the hands. As you can see in the photo below, the dial glows quite brightly. I think the fact that the lume is hand-applied is even more evident when you look at the shot with the lume glowing.But of course, everyone has a nightmare watch story to tell. "Unfortunately, I sent it to get cleaned because it was running erratically," he says. "I sent it to someone around the corner, and when it came back, it had another crown." Lowe pauses. "He kind of stole the crown and replaced it with a real modern, horrible crown from like a diving watch."

To spot a Type 6, look for the absence of a chapter ring on a gilt dial. Then look for diagonally shaped serifs on the "E" in Rolex. The T<25 writing replaces the upper portion of the minutes hash marks at 6:00.
