Due to macroeconomic headwinds resulting from World War I and the Great Depression, the Jules Jürgensen name was sold in 1936 to an American company. This began a chain of American ownership that resulted in many of the cheap and low-quality watches I knew.
One of the most interesting pocket watch movements we've ever seen is this one: the base movement was made by Patek Replica Richard Mille rm 07 Philippe, and it was fitted at Patek with a version of Dr. Daniels' co-axial escapement in the mid-1980s. Patek of course eventually declined to develop the co-axial escapement and put it into production, but this remains a fascinating example of a watch from the very long road to the eventual industrialization of the escapement by Omega.Likewise, the lume is good, better than I expected, and Oris has even gone to the trouble of applying lume to the hands for the home time sub-dial. A nice touch, indeed, though I do wish they had color-matched the date wheel.But these are just numbers and don't really tell the whole story, so let's take a closer look. Suspending disbelief in all the zeros at the end of these numbers, here are seven things I learned from the spring Geneva sales:
This particular example is the more luxe variant, featuring an 18k yellow-gold case that has never been polished. Like some of its stainless steel counterparts, its dial has both a telemeter and tachymeter scale finished in red and blue, adding a playful pop of color to an otherwise reserved watch. Longines has confirmed that this example was originally sold hodinky Richard Mille Super Clone in Italy back in 1967, and I myself can confirm that it's the best looking Ref. 7414 in yellow gold on the market today.All of this is to say that when you find an Aquastar today, you can tell that it has been put through its paces. Look no further than the great patina that this example has taken on, with the dial fading from an original steely black to a rich caramel-esque tropical brown. Note that the case has been left unpolished after all of these years because, well, why would you want your dive watch to be extra shiny? Check out this Aquastar 63 in the HODINKEE Shop.More recently, however, TNC has been investing in the protection of the Mangrove coastal forests through the establishment of Mangrove Market Women, a group that advocates for opportunities for local women through the protection of the mangrove forests.Finally, lot 225, a 1865(!) Patek Philippe bird box, which blew me away at the preview. Between 1860 and 1870, Patek produced a run of 12 bird boxes with watches, this being one of them. Right, 12 were made 150 years ago(!). The silver box is adorned with this intricate turquoise and black opaque enamel, the bird is so cool to watch (check it out here), and the enamel scene on the top depicts, of course, Lake Geneva with Mont Blanc in the background. This is museum level.
