Ian has pretty much always wanted a Rolex, but it was in 2016, during a road trip through Europe, that he decided to pull the trigger on a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. While in Italy, he started calling around – and finally ended up finding it in basel, Switzerland. I suppose this has to do with the black-on-black design and the lack of applied dial furniture. I found the depth was distracting at first, though it does seem to aid in the way light creates shadows for the sandwich markers.
One of the most interesting aspects of the watch is its operation. To say that the chronograph operation is, to trot out a well-worn horological cliché, buttery-smooth, is to say nothing at all. This might be one of the most enjoyable chronographs to operate that I have ever had the pleasure of starting, stopping and resetting; with your eyes shut, you might be falske jaeger-lecoultre ure holding in your hands any one of a tiny handful of absolutely top-tier chronographs from one of a tiny handful of makers.Part of what is so appealing to me about watches is how they connect us to the past. Even if you buy a watch that's brand-new it still ties you to the past and the history of a brand. But the watch I want to talk about here is one that flies under the radar of most connoisseurs: The Ralph Lauren Automotive Flying Tourbillon.These are time-and-date watches with black (SBGX261) or silver (SBGX263) dials that measure 37mm in diameter, with accuracy to +/- 10 seconds a year, featuring the simplest of polished markers and sharp dauphine hands. If you look at them, they're just watches, pure and simple, that cost an replica breitling Kellot equally unalarming $2,200. But when you look closer, you see that Grand Seiko has executed every single element – sparse as they are – precisely.As Patek's first effort at an in-house chronograph, these classical elements felt intentional, a statement that, while modern watchmaking was often about harder, better, faster, stronger, we're still Patek and we're going to continue, in many cases, doing things the way we've always done them. One of those things is making one of the best manual-wind chronographs on the market. The vintage inspiration of the 5170 is clear, perfectly punctuated with the pulsation scale.
