This year, the GPHG jury deliberations were held at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva, and in the vast marble chambers where we did our meeting, the GPHG Foundation had set up an exhibition of some of the previous years' winners. Here are a few of the watches that were shown.Limited to 250 watches, the ref IW395501 pays tribute to the "Silver Spitfire - The Longest Flight", a daring project to restore a Spitfire and then fly it around the world. As is common to the Spitfire collection, this Timezoner Spitfire uses a steel case, a warm faux-aged lume, and a green textile strap, replika Zenith drawing aesthetic inspiration from the famed warplane.Instead of red, this execution featuring a chronograph complication utilized orange as an accent color against a white wave dial. The inclusion of the caliber 1164 (Valjoux/ETA 7750 base) forced the steel case thickness to swell to 16mm. High-visibility orange was also used in the blue titanium version.The fans aren't the only ones having a hard time getting their hands on Asaoka's watch. The master watchmaker himself faces the same issue, as all of his watches under Hajime Asaoka are long spoken for and must be delivered to the new owner as soon as he finishes each piece. Kurono Tokyo is Asaoka's private watch collection in a way, doubling as his own playground where he toys with the case size, design, and other details to create watches that he'd simply enjoy wearing himself.
So here's the funny thing. Best Of Show at Quail and at Pebble were both from Mercedes, both 540Ks, both from 1938, and, oddly enough, both with owners named Keller. Coincidence? The engine and drive train have been serviced so the car can be driven, but by God, it looks like a car that's been around since 1955 all right.Most impressive? This watch took over 1,500 to 2,000 hours of work over the course of 15 years. At an estimate of CHF 60,000 to 120,000, that means – at the low end – you'd be paying Klings only $30/hour, a criminally low rate for this piece of art. But the last time it came up at Christie's, in 2017, it sold for only CHF 30,000.And with the Supernova and its $8,995 price tag, you are definitely paying for the movement alongside everything else I've mentioned above. As a guy who is on record (and has put his own money where his mouth is) concerning how I don't really mind that Bremont charges quite a lot for an ETA-based watch, the Supernova represents an entirely different offering, even when compared to the also ENG300-powered Fury and Audley, both of which retail for $6,795.To survey the astounding breadth in the burgeoning bunny-watch marketplace, I decided to review seven of them. Some I love and others I do not. Surely you will have your own opinions on which is best. Anyone would. At the end of the day, my main opinion is that there should be more animal-themed watches all the time, and not just when one appears on the calendar

That's the result of the market not yearning for Daytonas quite as much as it once did, yes. But it is also due to low supply. Given the attention focused elsewhere, collectors with great vintage Daytonas are holding these watches close to the chest. Why sell a watch that is experiencing a market downturn when you know you have an excellent example and eventually attention will come back?
