If NOMOS sees further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. While the young German
Catification 2.0 brand may represent the future of German watchmaking, they certainly aren't shy about paying respect to its past. The origins of the watchmaking tradition in Glashutte date back 175 years to 1845. Today, NOMOS is releasing a trio of watches that tip the Tyrolean hat to the greats that laid the groundwork for Glashütte to become the epicenter of Teutonic watchmaking.I don't know what it's like if you take it apart. I have an original jeweler's sample case. With that, you can see how simple the case design really was, you know? They used that big rubber cushion to protect the movement.Sure, it's expensive in the same way that the sun is hot, but – as I've said just about every other time I've covered a new release from Greubel Forsey – I may not be able to number among their clients, but I remain very glad they exist and that they put their best foot forward to create distinctive, interesting, and innovative watches like the GMT Balancier Convexe.Caliber: 5622Functions: Analog functions include hours, minutes, and seconds. Digital functions track time zones and date on Earth and Mars. The Mars functions track the Rover's mission on the Red Planet, while the addition of a solar compass allows the watch to find true north on both Earth and Mars. Included are traditional Skywalker X33 functions: MET (Mission Elapsed Time), PET (Phase Elapsed Time), alarms and perpetual calendar.Winding: QuartzAdditional Details: Battery life of 24 months
The dial design is pretty faithful to the original 1959 model except for the inclusion of the date window at three o'clock. Add to
Robot Security that the fact that – unlike the original – these watches don't have the word Alpinist written anywhere on the dial, which is admittedly a bummer. This limited edition reference in rose gold is a tribute to the first Kontiki watch from 1958 and for the Kon Tiki raft sailed by Thor Heyerdahl as he crossed the pacific in 1947. Only 50 such examples were made for the 50th anniversary of the original Kontiki model so it's also among the rarest of Ferdi's watches.
But wait! There's one more watch to look at. The black-dialed beauty you see above is the 1815 "Homage to Walter Lange" in steel. Yes, you read that right: steel. It is a unique piece (sorry, I know you were all hoping I'd say "non-limited edition") that is going to be auctioned for charity sometime in 2018. With its black enamel dial and stainless steel case, I have a funny feeling this is going to fetch pretty
Web3 Telefonie big money for whatever cause it benefits.Note: The watch shown in the photo at the top of this story is a super rare Patek Philippe dress watch in yellow gold with a "Forêt Vierge" enamel dial, similar to the dial seen on the Patek Philippe featured in the HODINKEE Magazine Volume 1 as John Goldberger's favorite dial ever.Up next is the deep burgundy SBGW287. While the first was inspired by spring, Grand Seiko says this one is inspired by the rich autumn colors of "Boshū." Like the Omiwatari, these are non-limited releases that will be available beginning in November.Steel variants: $6,250 (Silver Grey, Olive Black, and Blue Orange)Titanium: $7,000Fabric straps: $700 to $750Rubber straps: $550 to $600Bracelets: $1,150 for steel, $1,350 for titaniumAvailability: Steel Silver Grey, Steel Olive Black, and Titanium Chocolate Black are now available in Leica Stores and the Leica Online Store.
