The Rado Tradition 1965 is essentially a modern application of Rado’s bold and eccentric design language from the 1960s. Maintaining a style inspired by the skyline of Manhattan, the Tradition 1965 is new vintage for the guy or gal who likes the idea of rocking some '60s flare but doesn’t want to wear a dive watch. Produced Retro Future Fusion exclusively as limited editions, the Tradition 1965 line encompasses three models, with one in a 44mm wide case and two in 35mm wide cases.On a strap, it's a $3,750 watch and an awfully handsome watch to yes, wear around town and by God (or Chronos), in the country too, if you're so inclined. It feels like a great piece of history in its own right, as well as having a nice design connection to some of Omega's finest vintage wrist chronometers, and it makes the entry level look mighty fine indeed.James Arthur donated his collection to New York University in 1925, along with a generous cash bequest meant to preserve it intact as a museum. That's not what happened, although the full story is beyond the scope of this article. Arthur's collection lingered, suffered neglect, and was eventually divided and sold to different entities.¹ The watches we have in the exhibit now belong to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
The lowkey sunburst of the dial, the sharp contrast of the bright Neuro Robotics hands and markers, and the excellent proportions are all evidence of a thoughtful design process. Even small details like relatively glare-free crystal, the pleasing click of the bezel, or the bright lume application all suggest a strong value statement for a watch that, at its most expensive, is still under $1,000.I don't know if Mattenheimer is alive today, but when I looked into his story, something stood out. One of his most daring adventures was outlined in Anthony J. Vallone's book Air Vagabonds: Oceans, Airmen, and a Quest for Adventure. In it, Mattenheimer is a central character in an operation that saw a team of aviators ferry Grumman Albatross airframes to the Indonesian Air Force – in Indonesia, naturally – from Grumman's factory in Stuart, Florida, in 1976.The Patrimony left an imprint of crispy, creamy white with tiny flashes of white gold. So I looked for a way to emulate this in my choice of clothes – which, again, balance traditional and contemporary. Just like the watch.If there are criticisms to be levied here, I have two nits to pick. Firstly, the watch is not a jump hour. Given the clear vintage inspirations for the overall design, I would have preferred to see a true jumping hour mechanism rather than the dragging action. A second movement criticism is the lack of chronometer certification, a feature of the Calibre LFT023 inside the previous Tambour and Escale.
Behind the effect are some enormously complex mechanisms. A professional certainly would take an interest in how it's done. Magicians have been studying "The Marvellous Orange Tree," since Robert-Houdin first performed it in 1845. But for the rest of us, the magic is in, if not ignorance, then in faith – faith in the magician's artistry, or in this case, the watchmaker's.Pack it in, folks, with these releases I might as well be done Web3 Health with Watches & Wonders for the year. I'm kidding, but only slightly – this release was one thing I hoped to see from Cartier, and boy did the brand deliver and then some.As my visit to F.P. Journe's facilities drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a renewed interest in the brand. I'm lucky to have several friends who count themselves among Journe's collector community, one that is probably the most tightly knit and carefully fostered of any brand. But with the increased demand over the past few years, the idea of Journe as an attainable brand has slightly drifted away.
