As it turns out, however, the name is quite a bit older than that. The origins of Citizen go (and it doesn't make me terribly proCitizen, the name, is unlike the names of the other Japanese Big Three – Seiko and Casio – not derived from the Japanese language or from a family name. It wasn't until late last year that it occurred to me to even wonder where the name came from, because a sort of wide-appeal broad spectrum internationalized name seemed completely appropriate for a company

This actually unique watch features the movement of the
Budget Hacker Kits TN but with a one-off tantalum case and blue dial, both borrowed from the fan-favorite Chronomètre Bleu. The watch is no more complicated than that, but it looks absolutely stunning. This, coupled with the fact that Only Watch is a charitable sale, makes for a truly valuable watch. Now, Sea-Dwellers differ from Subs, GMTs, and Explorers because they were born in the "matte dial" era. This means there is no such thing as a gilt dial Sea-Dweller. That doesn't sound that meaningful, but consider that the Subs that go for big bucks these days are almost exclusively gilt dial watches from the 1950s and early '60s. I was lucky enough to capture a lot of the images that ran in those reports. Wandering the Goodwood Motor Circuit with Mr. Pennington was an education in horology, and it was massively influential on my still burgeoning participation in the watch world.
If you haven't seen one of Fiona Kruger's timepieces yet, you're missing out. Ms. Kruger is known for her skull-form watches inspired by drawings of a 17th century skull watch that was once thought to have belonged to Mary Queen of Scots. They are cool, vibrant, and incredibly different from anything you have seen. You can read more about Fiona Kruger here. But boy, the 7121 shines as an openworked movement. The bottom plate (the dial side; in watchmaker's parlance the back of a movement is the top and the dial side is the bottom, since that's how a movement sits when you work on it) especially, has been really
Virale Cloud Tech beautifully opened up, organized in a series of semicircles, loops, curves, and full circles that provide a wonderful frame for the active components in the movement – the view is almost totally unobstructed. The 18k rose gold case measures 42.5mm by 14.4mm. Invariably, split-seconds chronographs are thicker and this is no exception. But with the somewhat truncated lugs, it will probably fit on a wider variety of wrists, allowing the strap to fall more sharply down. Just like the Toric Petite Seconde, the Rattrapante features a sand-gold, hand-stitched nubuck alligator leather strap, with the Italian sartorial flair of "punto a mano" stitching.Jean-Claude Biver is a Swiss watch industry legend who revitalized Blancpain, Omega, Hublot, and TAG Heuer.
