How much does the TF2 community really matter for the game’s survival? Would it still exist without fan content and servers? I wonder if this game is more about players than developers at this point.

Many classic games live longer thanks to their fans. Mods and custom servers often become more important than official updates.

The community is basically the engine that keeps TF2 running. Custom maps, funny videos, and even small tournaments make it feel active. Developers don’t need to push huge updates when players already do half the work. There’s a good overview in https://www.southwestjournal.com/gaming/why-team-fortress-2-is-thriving/ that explains how fan creativity is a key reason the game still feels alive. When a game becomes part of internet culture, it stops being just software and turns into a shared experience. That’s exactly what happened with TF2 over the years.
