Early September saw the introduction of another Marinemaster. It was a return to the looks of the
link 1968 diver that we know as the inspiration for the Marinemaster SBDX001. But another realization was that Seiko would now use the Marinemaster name for watches of multiple styles. This is the world’s thinnest watch, and it was awarded the Men’s Watch prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.Pricing will start at $6,775 for a steel example on a strap and top out at $8,150 for the full titanium Launch Edition. While certainly still a luxury price point, let's not forget that the German-powered (and more complicated) ZM 2 launched with a list price of $14,000.On this side of the watch world, I feel like I've been given a second chance to rediscover what watches mean to me and how I talk about them. I'm about to say the most cliched phrase in all of watch media, but I am very lucky to be able to do what I do. Getting to turn what was once a hobby into a career is not something a lot of people get a chance at, and I try to remind myself of that anytime I feel a bit jaded. But anyway, I digress.
The movement is very easy to use. It has a rather small crown, but it's a push/pull type, so it's easy to operate. Pull it out to the first
link position and turn it clockwise to change the day. Turn it counterclockwise, and it will change the date. Pulling out the crown to the second position lets you easily set the time.A simple press on the lever located at 8 o'clock on the 38mm-diameter white gold case middle stimulates them to perform a circular movement, while the blue flowers undulate in an imaginary wind.Speaking of Pepsi bezels, there's a great spacey Easter egg of a watch courtesy of Ed Harris' Gene Kranz (NASA's Chief Flight Director) who wears a Seiko Speedtimer with a blue and red bezel. And you'll also notice that Haise wears not one, but two Speedmasters. Double-wristing in space is serious business.
Dial-side, the time data, numerals, indexes and counters, also take on a solar color thanks to the use of
link satin-brushed, microblasted 3N gold.Just awesome stuff, and an inspiring collection of watches that most collectors today would deem "out of fashion." I disagree. These will never go out of style, and I encourage you to follow the fun here. When James went hands-on with the Black Bay Pro in April, he swooned: "As a guy with more than enough dive watches and a seemingly unfillable GMT-shaped hole in his heart, I really like the Black Bay Pro. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I think Tudor has successfully blended the familiarity of the past with the growing perspective of the Black Bay line to create something that, in specificity, I didn't know I wanted and am now very glad exists."
