As women, we pride ourselves on our appearance and like to keep ourselves in tip-top shape. For some that means a weekly mani/pedi, others a Brazilian hair bundles, or a banging new hairstyle a la the wonderful creation of extensions.

We ladies will shell out hundreds of dollars for an install we hope lasts for 2-3 months, but most of us won't properly take care of the weave, let alone our own hair to make sure we are getting the most out of the install and not reverse affects.

1. Washing Your Hair

It is important to wash both your weave and your natural hair after every 7-14 days. Wet your hair with lukewarm water and make sure to use a sulfate-free shampoo. Carefully rub the shampoo between the braids and massage it onto your scalp. Rinse and repeat. Do not vigorously scrub your hair as that can tangle the weave.

2. Combing and Detangling

The right combing technique is crucial when you’re brushing out your hair. Don’t rip the comb through the weave as it will pull on the extensions and yank them out. That can cause major damage to your real hair. Always start detangling from bottom up, and preferably while the hair is wet.

3. Drying Out Your Hair

After you’ve cleansed and detangled your curly hair weave, dry it out completely. Blow-dry or air dry in the sun until it’s not wet anymore. Moisture in the weave braids can make your hair smell like mildew, so it is important to dry thoroughly.

4. Scratching Your Head

Never scratch your scalp with fingernails, a rat-toothed comb, or anything else with a sharp, pointed tip. Doing so can irritate the scalp and cause scabs. Because you don’t frequently wash your weave extensions, the scalp can get a little itchy. For quick relief, use a scalp soother or tea tree oil.

5. Sleeping with Your Weave

Avoiding friction when you have weave extensions is paramount. Keep your extensions looking on-the-go fabulous and brand new at all times by wrapping them in a silk scarf or a satin pillowcase before you go to bed. Satin and silk help avoid friction and rubbing against your hair which can lead to hair fall.
