The Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5650 Advanced Research was one of Patek's most-talked-about timepieces at baselworld 2017. This reference marked the debut of a new "friction-free compliant mechanism" for setting the local time. It was an unexpected treat to spend more than fake omega watch a minute or two with this watch, as it is one of my personal favorites of the year.Update: an earlier version of this story mistakenly described the display of the modern Computron as a backlit LCD display. The display is actually a 7 segment LED display (thanks to the sharp-eyed reader who pointed this out).Modern center seconds movements with added gearing to support a small seconds hand are fascinating. It doesn't aid legibility, of course, and it's a bit of a break with a basic principles of good engineering which is to not add complexity for no reason. But it does mean you can recreate a vintage look, without having to invest (a lot) of money in designing and tooling up for a new movement.The bi-directional ceramic bezel insert is black, but is half polished and half micro-blasted. This makes it appear as two different colors, with the appearance of each half changing depending on the light and angle. It's a cool effect I didn't appreciate in the initial renders of the Zulu Time. The white numerals feel a bit mismatched against the dial's gilt accents, leaving the watch caught between its heritage inspiration and modern execution.

It's an unusual watch, I'm not link going to lie, but I think I kind of dig it? The Roman numerals and clean white lacquer dial link add a bit of a classical touch to the Royal Oak's recognizable octagonal form factor that's filled with harsh lines and angles. What makes this watch link extra, extra special though is the number on the caseback: "No. 001." Numero uno, baby. We'll have to wait and see next week where it lands in relation to its estimate of CHF 50,000 - 100,000.
